Contending For Christ

“Contending For Christ” is the new book written by Stephen W. Lange.  The book discusses the spiritual war that every Christian is engaged in, the war between Satan’s kingdom of the world and Jesus Christ’s kingdom of God.

Paul tells us that we are not fighting a physical war, but a spiritual war.  Our enemies are the enemies of God that would try to destroy our lives and our faith in God and the salvation that He has provided us in Christ:

For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.  Ephesians 6:12 NKJV.

How did the spiritual war start?  Who are the subjects in Satan’s kingdom of the world?  Why does God allow the war to continue when He has the power and the will to end evil?

We are born into Satan’s kingdom of the world and need no training in order to fight to exalt ourselves and our desires over those of other people.  But after  we give our lives to Christ we must prepare and train to fight for the kingdom of God.  We must swear allegiance to Christ and God.

We are simultaneously fighting in three separate arenas in the spiritual war.  We are fighting in a personal arena of ourselves, warring against our desires and the worldly wisdom that calls to us to gratify ourselves and ignore God.  We are fighting to allow the truth of God to sanctify us through His word.  We are fighting in the public arena of ideas, seeking to show the reality of God’s existence, His creation of the universe and all life, and the salvation He has graciously given us in Christ.  We are standing in the gap for other people, trying to lead lives that glorify God and seeking to see people saved from the wrath of God that is coming on the world.  God means for us to fight for people that don’t know Him.

We don’t fight with physical weapons, but with the weapons that God has provided us:

For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ.  2 Corinthians 10:3-5 NKJV.

The outcome of the spiritual war is assured.  Satan and everyone who rejects Christ will be defeated.  But God’s heart is to see people saved from the just punishment for sin that His righteousness demands!

We contend for Christ in the kingdom of Satan!
